Multi-Channel Merchants Should Turn to Online Retail to Succeed During Tough Economic Times

According to a recent Nielsen study, trips to U.S. retail outlets have decreased by 1.4% in the third quarter of 2008, compared with Q3 2007. However, retail channels offering low prices did best during Q3 2008. Trips to online retailers went up by 7.5%, while trips to supercenters and dollar stores increased 3.6% and 3% respectively, showing the largest increases, compared with Q3 2007.
Brick-and-mortar-only stores could take a big hit from the economy without an online store to compensate for the lost revenue.
